TSA Liquids Rules for Skincare, Explained Simply (2026)

Nothing ruins a trip faster than watching security toss your favorite serum. Here's the TSA liquids rule for skincare, explained in two minutes.

🌟 Quick answer: Yes, you can bring skincare in your carry-on. Each container must be 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, and all of them must fit in one clear, quart-size bag. Anything larger goes in your checked bag.

The 3-1-1 rule in 30 seconds

For carry-on bags on US flights, TSA's liquids rule comes down to three numbers:

  • 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less per container
  • 1 clear, resealable quart-size bag for all of them
  • 1 bag per passenger

Anything bigger goes in your checked bag. TSA PreCheck doesn't change the limits; it only means you can usually leave the bag inside your carry-on at screening.

What counts as a liquid

TSA counts liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes, which covers almost every skincare step: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, eye cream, sunscreen. The simple test: if it pours, pumps, squeezes or spreads, it goes in the quart bag.

2 things that trip people up

  1. The size on the bottle is what counts, not what's left. A nearly empty 6 oz moisturizer still gets taken.
  2. "Didn't they change the rule?" Not yet. Some checkpoints have new CT scanners, but 3-1-1 still applies nationwide, so pack for it. Check TSA.gov before you fly.

How to pack skincare for a carry-on

  1. Count your days. A 4-day trip needs 4 days of product, not a full bottle of everything.
  2. Put liquids in one quart bag.
  3. Skip decanting.
  4. Choose sealed, pre-measured portions. They take the least space and nothing gets opened until you use it.

FAQ

1. Can I bring full-size skincare in my carry-on?

No. Containers over 3.4 oz (100 ml) must go in your checked bag, even if they're almost empty.

2. Is sunscreen a liquid?

Lotion, cream, gel and spray sunscreens all count. Containers must be 3.4 oz or less and go in your quart bag.

3. Does TSA PreCheck let me bring bigger bottles?

No. The size limits are the same. PreCheck usually just lets you keep your liquids bag inside your carry-on during screening.

4. Do I have to take my liquids bag out at security?

In standard lanes, usually yes: TSA says separating it from your carry-on speeds up screening. Some checkpoints with newer scanners let you leave it in, so follow the officer's instructions.

5. Are the rules the same on international flights?

Most airports use a similar 100 ml limit, but details vary by country. Check the rules for every airport you'll depart from, including your flight home.

Keep every liquid at 3.4 oz or less, fit them all in one quart bag, and pack solids anywhere. The fewer bottles you bring, the faster you get through security.

Pack the days, not the bottles.
